MAZDA ICONIC SP

The name says it all, the iconic RX-7 and rotary engine..to make a return?

Mazda's concept, the Iconic SP, released at the Japan Mobility Show 2023, has exceptional shapes and form to its surfacing, a stunning looking car. It clearly has RX-7 written all over in its name. There are rumours that it could be the next MX-5 Miata but its numbers is telling another story. It is going to be a hybrid that is driven by electric with a twin-rotor rotary engine to help with charging

Mazda says carbon neutral fuel is going to be used for the rotary engine. Other targets are low center of gravity, 50:50 weight distribution and light weight. If it goes into production, it may have to lose those pop-up headlight covers. The lines around the windscreen may hint at an easy transformation as a cabriolet version or a que to the Miata like those rear light cluster. Hopefully Mazda will retain the concept's style of door opening

Dimension

Length                          4,180mm         (RX-7 FD 4,285 mm)   -105mm

Width                           1,850mm         (RX-7 FD 1,760 mm)   +90mm

Height                         1,150mm         (RX-7 FD 1,230 mm)   -80mm

Wheelbase                  2,590mm         (RX-7 FD 2,446 mm)   +144mm

Maximum output        370ps              (RX-7 FD 258ps)         +112ps

Weight                        1,450kg           (RX-7 FD 1284kg)       +166kg

Power-weight ratio    3.9

It is lower, wider and shorter than the previous RX-7 that is known as the FD but has longer wheelbase. Mazda says it is neither RX-7 nor Miata and points at an all new model however, having said that, placed a name like Iconic to this concept

Furthermore Mazda says the hybrid can supply power when enjoying outdoor leisure and in the time of a disaster, yep although for tuners, a two stage exhaust system is highly recommended when the battery runs out and the engine takes over

An all electric Land Cruiser concept exercising a new design approach

This is going to get some attention. The concept is called a Toyota Land Cruiser Se

Toyota further broadens the Land Cruiser brand's appeal with a three-row SUV that caters to the world's diverse needs. BEV quietness helps create a comfortable cabin space when driving in urban areas and other on-road situations. A monocoque body also offers highly responsive handling and confidence in tackling rough terrain

Length 5,150mm

Width 1,990mm

Height 1,705mm

Wheelbase 3,050mm

Weight Dont ask kg

Passenger capacity 7 occupants

Ironically they raised the corners of the front wing just like on a Range Rover. Is that a sign of, rather than copying, a nod that the Range Rover's design is the benchmark since its inception? It even incorporates the floating roofline for good measure

Singer DLS Turbo

Singer Vehicle Design takes their DLS formula which is Dynamics and Lightweight Study to over 700hp paying homage to Porsche 964/5 while at it

Singer DLS Turbo, celebrating the victorious 934/5 endurance racers of the 1970s. That horizontal fan that mimics past racing Porsche air-cooled or water air-cooled hybrid engines is a very nice touch indeed. All carbon bodied road spec car is the one without the rear wing and track spec car is the one with a rear wing

From their website;

3.8L, 4-valves per cylinder flat-six uses twin turbochargers, with electric wastegates, air-to-water intercooling and a horizontally mounted, electrically powered fan. This evolution of the engine developed for DLS restorations enables power outputs over 700 HP at more than 9000 rpm.

6-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels. Track spec suspension and bespoke dampers with remote adjustment are among the details that may be considered.

Powerful carbon ceramic discs and lightweight, monobloc calipers for both road and track use are installed. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 or Cup 2R tires are mounted on lightweight 19” (front) and 20” (rear) forged magnesium, centrelock wheels

Interesting how the turbochargers are arranged in reverse to how Porche normally do it so the chargecoolers can be neatly packaged in front of the engine and the exhaust coming out from the side of the rear bumper

Porsche Mission X

Porsche's new Hypercar is all electric

In their press kit, they mention the Porsche 959, Carrera GT and then the 918 Spyder. The Mission X is going to be Porsche's new swansong performance car. Numbers that are out there is that it produces 1,500bhp and weights 1,500kg, a 1:1 power to weight ratio and has an electric drive for each wheel

Measuring approximately 4.5 metres long and two metres wide, the Mission X concept study is a relatively compact hypercar. With a wheelbase of 2.73 metres, it has the dimensions of the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder. Porsche states, if the Mission X goes into series production, then it should

• be the fastest road-legal vehicle around the Nürburgring Nordschleife

• have a power-to-weight ratio of roughly one PS per kilogram

• achieve downforce values that are well in excess of those delivered by the current 911 GT3 RS; offer significantly improved charging performance with its 900-volt system architecture and charge roughly twice as quickly as Porsche’s current frontrunner, the Taycan Turbo S.

A lightweight glass dome with an exoskeleton made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic extends over both occupants. The Le Mans-style doors are attached to the A-pillar and the roof; they open forwards and upwards. This type of door was previously used on the legendary Porsche 917 racing car. Another eye-catcher is the light signature: for the Mission X, the designers have reinterpreted the characteristic. Porsche four-point graphic.

The vertical base form of the headlights was inspired by historic racing cars such as the Porsche 906 and 908 and drawn well down towards the road. One special detail is the modernised Porsche crest, which makes its debut on the Mission X. Brushed precious metal, a three-dimensional honeycomb structure, a refreshed heraldic beast and more subtle gold colour – on close inspection, these are the differences on the modernised Porsche crest

Its canopy design that is influenced by past racing Porsches is a nice touch and well executed. Typically Porsche influences aesthetic attraction through the look of quality as well. Some interesting features that are contemporary to todays lifestyle with media is its ability to record the experience. There are multiple cameras on board. Recording starts as soon as the driver presses the Record button (REC) on the multi-purpose controller.

Ferrari SP48 Unica

A special one-off project for a special client, a product of Ferrari's Centro Stile

The Ferrari SP48 Unica is build on the F8 Tributo platform including its powerplant, the twin-turbo V8 engine. Ferrari claims aerodynamic drag has been reduced by 12%. The SP48 Unica goes back to the times when cars are rebodied for a certain client or even by a styling firm to make a mark to their brand and their clientele. Exclusivity and uniqueness are sorted by clients not wanting to be owning a special brand that makes special cars many others have and even more so if the car is as stunning as this. Being one of one, the Unica is definitely the ultimate representation of this

HCR Hypersport V4 Turbo

Normally this should find itself in the Hypothesis section of this site but in this case it lands here for being such a cool looking engine. This is a HRC-V4R Hypersport engine and is built to race snowmobiles. Its block is made from aluminium billet, it is 1,991cc and has a large Precision Turbo on top of that hot vee set up. Rumours are that it is targeted to achieve 2,000 horsepower

The reason behind having two turbo wastegates is that this is a development engine and Hypersport are just trying to be prepared. This engine is designed around being fuelled by CH30H methanol. It is a vee four that is on a twin pin crankshaft set at 360°
